Résumé : |
The emergence of voluntary corporate codes of conduct since the early 1990s is both a manifestation of and a response to the process of globalization. They have been part of a more general shift away from state regulation of transnational corporations towards corporate self-regulation in the areas of labour and environmental standards and human rights. This work provides a critical perspective on the growth and significance of corporate codes with a particular focus on working conditions and labour rights. It brings together work by academics, practitioners and activists. |

Résumé : |
This book is highly critical of the policies of the World Bank, which was established in 1946 and named The International Bank of Reconstruction and Development. It, along with the International Monetary Fund, was one of the international institutions arising out of the Bretton Woods Conference. Rich suggests that to protect the environment and to better help the poor of the world, it would be appropriate to abolish the World Bank on its 50th anniversary unless it can be radically reformed. The type of radical reforms that Rich would like to see include more disbursement of its funds through non-governmental organizations (NGOs) rather than governments, with much more attention being paid to local communities. |

Résumé : |
This monograph questions the benefits of free trade, arguing that, far from promoting prosperity for all those involved, free trade only serves a narrow range of interests, primarily for the large corporations who conduct it. The authors claim that the consequences of present arrangements and those promised under the new GATT agreement will increase the difference between the world's rich and poor and accelerate the destruction of the global environment. The authors suggest instead that trading arrangements should emphasize regional self-sufficiency and the overall amount of trade should be reduced. |
