| Résumé : |
Good Governance has recently become one of British aid's priority objectives, and it is prominent also in World Ba,k and European policy. There is much talk of growing democratisation in Africa and Latin America, not to mention in parts of the former Soviet Union and Central an Eastern Europe.
There is little discussion on what good governance means to the majority of Southern women and men, on how it relates to other policy priorities, or on how the international community could seriously further or foster it. |

| Résumé : |
In this booklet, governance is defined as the manner in which power is exercised in the management of a country's economic and social resources for development. Good governance is synonymous with sound development management. The Bank's experience has shown that the programs and projects it helps finance may be technically sound, but fail to deliver anticipated results for reasons connected to the quality of government action. This booklet identifies four areas of governance that are consistent with the Bank's mandate: public sector management, accountability, the legal framework for development, and information and transparency. It focuses on the last three areas, analyzes issues of relevance to the Bank, and cites examples of Bank experience and best practice in the area. |
