Titre : A Paper Tiger : The new EU draft regulation on banking structure Type de document : document électronique Auteurs : Peter Wahl, Auteur Editeur : Amsterdam [Nederland] : SOMO Année de publication : February 2014 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Banques Tags : Marchés financiers Banques Investissements Réformes Politique financière Résumé : As the term of the present European Commission is ending with the European elections in May 2014, Michel Barnier, the responsible commissioner for financial reforms, has tabled on 29 January 2014 his last law project of this legislature: to reform the structure of big banks. The basic intention is to address whether to separate the risky investment banking business from commercial banking, and through this contribute to solve the problem of too-big-to-fail. As the 2008 financial crash had shown, the speculative risks of investment banking had badly affected the normal, 'boring' banking business, such as credit business for the real economy, and for savings and payments, to such extent that tax payers’ money needed to prevent a total melt down. In so far the directive, although coming late, tackles a serious problem. Titre : Should the Netherlands sign tax treaties with developing countries? Type de document : document électronique Auteurs : K. McGauran, Auteur Editeur : Amsterdam [Nederland] : SOMO Année de publication : June 2013 Importance : 70 p Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Investissements Justice fiscale Commerce et développement Pays-Bas Résumé : SOMO is pleased to present this report on double taxation treaties and the potential negative impact of Dutch DTAs on developing countries revenues. This report aims to provide information for relevant stakeholders (parliamentarians, policy-makers, journalists and civil society organisations) on the impact of DTAs in developing countries. An impact analysis is particular important in the context of the new 2011 Dutch fiscal treaty strategy, which announced the governments plan to extend its tax treaty network to more developing countries. The report also identifies areas for further research to develop alterantives to the current regime of international taxation and taxation treaties. The urgent need for a fundamental change in the current system is particularly highlighted by the fact that developing countries are experiencing massive annual revenue losses in the midst of a financial crisis and austerity measures that hitting the poor the hardest. Titre : The missing dimension : How European financial reforms ignore developing countries and sustainability Type de document : document électronique Auteurs : Myriam Vander Stichele, Auteur Editeur : Amsterdam [Nederland] : SOMO Année de publication : October 2011 Importance : 46 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Crise économique et financière
EuropeTags : Crise économique et financière Europe Réformes Pays en développement Résumé : The financial crisis that erupted in Europe in autumn 2008 resulted in an economic crisis that also severely affected many developing countries as documented in many reports. The lack of export opportunities and bank credit for trade, for instance, badly hit the income of developing countries.
In order to prevent a new crisis, the European Union (EU) started to reform its financial sector. Although the financial sector is clearly global and interconnected, whereby many European banks are present in developing countries, little attention is given to what impact the EUs financial reforms have on developing countries. In addition, the EU financial reforms do not take the global environmental and social challenges into account and make no attempt to ensure that the financial sector supports the transformation to sustainable economies and societies.
This report has selected a series of new financial laws on which the EU has decided or will decide on, made on the basis of the perceived importance for developing countries and sustainable development. It assesses those EU financial reforms and makes recommendations on how they should be improved to integrate the interests of developing countries as well as sustainability.
