Titre : The 'net-zero emission fallacy' Type de document : document électronique Auteurs : Meena Raman, Auteur Editeur : Third World Network Année de publication : janvier 2021 Collection : Third World Resurgence num. 347 Importance : 48 p Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Economie mondiale Climat Index. décimale : 01 Economie Résumé : Current targets for achieving net-zero carbon emissions fall far short of what is needed to contain climate change and allow the developed countries to evade their fair share of climate action. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, since early this year, has been calling on governments to come forward with significantly more ambitious actions by all parties under the Paris Agreement (PA) in order ‘to stop the climate crisis from becoming a permanent catastrophe’, which requires the limiting of temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius from preindustrial levels. The UNSG has called for 2030 targets from governments consistent with a net-zero pathway and has cited an exponential growth of the global coalition for net-zero emissions as a ‘central objective for the UN this year.’ Note de contenu : -The dismantling of environmental protections in Brazil p.2-3

Titre : The New Imperialism Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Harvey, Auteur Editeur : Oxford [UK] : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 2003 Importance : 275 p Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Conflits armés Tags : Impérialisme Etats-Unis Pétrole Relations internationales Science politique Développement économique Index. décimale : 01 Economie Résumé : People around the world are confused and concerned. Is it a sign of strength of or of weakness that the US has suddenly shifted from a politics of consensus to one of coercion on the world stage? What was really at stake in the war on Iraq? Was it all about oil and, if not, what else was involved? What role has a sagging economy played in pushing the US into foreign adventurism and what difference does it make that neo-conservatives rather than neo-liberals are now in power? What exactly is the relationship between US militarism abroad and domestic politics?
These are the questions taken up in this compelling and original book. Closely argued but clearly written, David Harvey, a leading social theorist of his generation, builds a conceputal framework to expose the underlying forces at work behind these momentous shifts in US policies and politics. The compulsions behind the projection of US power on the world as a 'new imperialism' are here, for the first time, laid bare for all to see.En ligne : http://eatonak.org/IPE501/downloads/files/New%20Imperialism.pdf The New Imperialism [texte imprimé] / David Harvey, Auteur . - Oxford (UK) : Oxford University Press, 2003 . - 275 p.

Titre : The Profit Paradox : How Thriving Firms Threaten the Future of Work Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jan Eeckhout, Auteur Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2021 Importance : 327 p Note générale : 01 EEC Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Capitalisme Monopole Croissance économique Salaire Economie numérique Index. décimale : 01 Economie Résumé : In an era of technological progress and easy communication, it might seem reasonable to assume that the world’s working people have never had it so good. But wages are stagnant and prices are rising, so that everything from a bottle of beer to a prosthetic hip costs more. Economist Jan Eeckhout shows how this is due to a small number of companies exploiting an unbridled rise in market power—the ability to set prices higher than they could in a properly functioning competitive marketplace. Drawing on his own groundbreaking research and telling the stories of common workers throughout, he demonstrates how market power has suffocated the world of work, and how, without better mechanisms to ensure competition, it could lead to disastrous market corrections and political turmoil. The retreat to unfreedom / Prabhat Patnaik
Titre : The retreat to unfreedom : essays on the emerging world order Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Prabhat Patnaik, Auteur Editeur : Tulika Books Année de publication : 2003 Importance : 302 p Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Mondialisation Tags : Capitalisme Mondialisation Impérialisme Inde Economie politique Index. décimale : 01 Economie Résumé : For the first two decades after World War II, it appeared as if mankind was embarking on a remarkable journey towards freedom: the socialist world underwent a rapid expansion and the advanced capitalist countries restructured themselves.
The world today, however, presents a totally changed scenario. With the collapse of the Soviet Union the socialist project regressed; on the other side, the ‘golden age’ of capitalism has become a distant memory. Above all, there has been a veritable rolling back of ‘decolonization’, with the third world once again being pushed back under metropolitan hegemony. Poverty has increased and there is a growth of fascism of different hues.
An important factor underlying this substantial change is the emergence of a new form of international finance capital which has undermined the capacity of the nation-state. If progress along the road to freedom has come to a halt and/or been reversed, if there is a retreat to unfreedom, then, the analysis of the causes of this retreat requires an exploration of the immanent logic of this new form of international finance capital. The essays in this book constitute a preliminary attempt at such an exploration. The retreat to unfreedom : essays on the emerging world order [texte imprimé] / Prabhat Patnaik, Auteur . - [S.l.] : Tulika Books, 2003 . - 302 p.
